Lesson 7: Ebooks on EbscoHost

1. Topic of interest - Leadership Skills

Findings and observations:  I thought there were some interesting and useful books on this topic.  One such title was The Rookie Manager: a guide to surviving your first year in management -(hit relevant pgs.) certain co-workers at the same level serve as a model for your own leadership.
In another title Words from Great Business Leaders - advice from Madame C.J. Walker, Getty and someone at Southwest Airlines.  The advice from Southwest was good - leadership said "value time one spends with your people more than anything else you do."
Then I changed the search terms to leadership development.  Several of the same titles appeared using these terms.  I thought both searches produced good information on leadership skill/development.

2. Constitution Day:

I had trouble here.  I'm not sure if I got out of the ebook section or if there just wasn't much using the term Constitution Day.  To get something I went to Student Research Center and got a Time for Kids article.  It was okay and the article addressed Constitution Day.
I opted out of the system and went back into Ebooks on Ebsco and got a couple more titles that would be helpful to students looking for information.  This search produced more relevant information.  Titles included Proclamation 8862 - Constitution Day and Citizen Day, Celebrating constitution Day by Cathy Carpenter, Constitution Day by Bradford Wilson and finally We the People: Constitution & Citizenship Day.  It helps when you're in the right area!

3.  Western History:

Oklahoma - I felt there were many books to chose from for a report.  Some titles held unique stories or information that could set a report apart from the group.  Here is a short list with an asterisk by titles with more "interesting information."
Guide to Oklahoma
*Oklahoma Treasures /Treasure Tales
*Oklahoma Name Places
**Two Stories of Oklahoma by Hamlin Garland - I chose this because I read some of his stuff in college, back in the day.

Basic Discovery Exercise - Lesson 6

Gale Virtual Reference Library
1.  Article by Table of Contents:

The College Blue Book - South Dakota
This listed the colleges in South Dakota, a description of the school - state supported, coed, when founded etc.  and entrance requirements.  This would be a great benefit for parents and students doing a compare and contrast for in-state  schools.  One would walk away knowing the physical and population size of the school and community, and student to faculty ratio.  Good information for any one interested in going to or returning to school.

2.   I used your examples zinc and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
zinc - I typed foods containing zinc in the search box - no results.  After a few minutes fumbling through different zinc/food combinations I just typed zinc.  Several (20 or so titles) came up.  Nothing really about food, but several interesting books  - one on ADHD pertaining to zinc and another pertaining more to the topic - Mineral Deficiency.  Still, I did not find a list specific foods containing zinc.

I enjoyed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn search much more.  The student could chose specific literary themes to discuss in his/her project such as race and prejudice.  Themes of the American Dream, the rise of censorship and  a more obvious one, slavery.  This would be a great help to students doing a project.  It would help to focus the project on one or two important issues or discussions.

Lesson 5 -- Proquest

1. I did a basic search on German Shepherd dogs.  There were tons of articles many dealing with physical or health related problems of this particular bred, from complex segregation analysis of hip dysplasia to the type of coat that a German shepherd should have.  There were articles on herding since a "shepherd" is a herding dog.   I was surprised by the amount of information.
1a. I read a blog about maritime shipping.  It appeared the blogger enjoyed that subject - he said he used a voice activated blog.  I assume that means he just talks and what he says is written or blogged.  I'd not heard of that until now.

2. Publications:
I chose library as my keyword.  First I tried "in title" which did not produce much then  I used "in subject" and up popped 96 publications.  On the right side of the screen were a list of source types, such as scholarly journals, trade journals, magazines, books and other.  The "other" happened to be a BLOG which I looked at briefly.  It was the "Distant Librarian".  This blog brought up Library and Information Sciences which was more information than I wanted.

Not much for observations on this challenge - I'm starting to feel crunch time since lesson 6 came out Sunday and it's already Tuesday.

Lesson 4 - SIRS Reacher/Discoverer

1. Armadillos - discuss results.
There were not a lot of current (2013) articles.  Of course armadillo information probably does not change much over time.  The article I chose was Awesome Armadillos (2003).  It had pictures and all reading levels.
 2. "Database Features" I selected Sweden.  It gave the official name , population, government type, agriculture, climate, and currency etc... Major historical event - Did you know?  Sweden has not been involved in any wars for nearly 200 years!
"Maps of the World"  - Chose Germany - gave administrative borders, major roadways, rail etc.
The Ties of Trade map would be great for a history class - could display old ships w/ map routes.

Database Features:
I chose Science Fair - Junk Drawer -  This will be great for the Summer Reading Program! We will be using it.
Focus on physics -  case of the water walker

REASEARCHER:
1. Binge Drinking - pros/cons section -Should college campus implement campus wide restrictions of alcohol to prevent binge drinking.
-global impact
terms to know
2. Pathfinders favorite topic: Language Arts
gave research ideas
how to analyze poetry
Literary criticism and interpretation

Left side listed
Favorite courses
Literature and Journalism
History and Languages
Writing and Reading help

Over all this section would be helpful to many teachers - I hope they are taking advantage of it!

Learning Express -Basic Discovery Exercise:

Setting up an account seemed to be my biggest struggle - too many passwords and usernames to remember.  Once the account was set, Learning Express proved to have a lot of practical application.

2. For the exam section I choose Reading Skills and read about sea otters in the Bering Sea decline in population and  possible causes for the decline.  I enjoyed the article and the test questions were direct and well written.
3. Job searching and resume  writing:  Career Course - Job Search and Networking Skills.  Helpful online search tips were given when searching for a job such as -don't be too general or too specific.  Jobs will be missed by narrowing the field too much.  Watch for "keyword phrases".
A list of common abbreviations for the classified section of the paper was given which would eliminate guess work when searching classifieds.
For people looking for work, Trade publications and Professional Associations also have job opening/listings.
I think if people would use this site it could cut job search time which would be a benefit to them.

4. The search term I typed was Master gardener, which was not a good search term.  59 e-books  popped up, I looked at the LSAT - Logic Games, nothing on gardening, but would be very helpful if I was looking at taking the bar examine.
I did thumb through: How to write great essays.  Again not in my area, but it was interesting.  This title would be a good source for individuals needing more focus on a topic, speech writing and writing in general as well as writing essays for tests.

Chilton/Mango Lesson 2

The Chilton Auto Repair Manuals were easy to maneuver through.
I.
Three things that should be done at 30,000 for a 2007 Volkswagon Jetta were:
1. service/inspect - brake pad thickness and brake system
2. replace the engine oil & filter (should change oil every 5,000 miles)
3. rotate and inspect tires!
My car has hit 70,000 miles so these things have all been done at least twice.
II.
Most recent Technical Service Bulletin/Recall
7/26/2007 issued
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Plates, Safety - Certification La..
This was not helpful to me.
III.
Click to repair tab - note some information about brakes for your car.
My car has an Anti-lock braking system and the brakes  have hydraulic components.

MANGO!

Basic Discovery exercise:
1. Read about the language and culture.
I did not find the information on the language or culture.  I did click on a photo which took me to Flickr.  There were many beautiful photos of Sweden.  Then I went back to the FAQ and hit libraries.  That page was specific to how to teach patrons new languages.  It said the course lessons included memory building  exercises and critical thinking.

2. Launch
I enjoyed this lesson 1 of this program.  I felt very successful.  The repetition and breakdown of the conversation make it easy to follow.  I enjoyed  the accent of the Swedish languages and thought the
pronunciation cues were very helpful.  My experience was positive, liked it all.

Lesson 2 Learning Express/Reviewed and thought this was accurate

There are many choices for testing, which is nice.  I chose the culinary arts exam.  It was all multiple choice which is okay.  The testing experience wasn't as stressful as taking it for a grade and once the answers were scored you could view the questions and correct answers, which would be very useful for students.

It looks as if there is something for most people - for instance I could benefit from taking the Business writing clear and simple.  It may help me in my weekly newspaper column!

I typed in cognitive thinking and it came up with several e-books and tests.  I typed biology as a search and course specific e-books and tests appeared.
This type of search might be fun for junior/seniors in high school to "test" their knowledge and check their interest in an area.
